THE CURRENT GC STANDINGS AT THE GIRO D'ITALIA AFTER STAGE 5

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) kept the Giro d’Italia race leader’s pink jersey after stage 5 to Lucca on a day which saw no changes to the general classification.

Pogačar was on the attack on the opening three stages of this year’s Corsa Rosa but once again stayed quiet on stage 5 as he did on the fourth stage to Andora which ended in a sprint.

The 178km stage was set to be another one for the sprinters, though a four-man breakaway spoiled the party, fending off the peloton and battling amongst themselves for the stage win, 11 seconds ahead of points jersey holder Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek).

While Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) scored his team's first win of the season, beating Michael Valgren (EF Education-EasyPost), Andrea Pietrobon (Polti-Kometa) and Enzo Paleni (Groupama-FDJ) to the line, it was Milan who led the peloton home in fifth ahead of his fellow sprinters.

Race leader Pogačar finished the day in 29th place to retain his overall lead. He still leads Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) by 46 seconds in the general classification, with Dani Martínez (Bora-Hansgrohe) third at 47 seconds.

White jersey wearer Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike) stays in fourth overall at 55 seconds and Einer Rubio (Movistar) is still fifth at 56 seconds.

Lorenzo Fortunato (Astana Qazaqstan) is the first man outside of a minute down on Pogačar in sixth place at 1:07 while Juan Pedro López (Lidl-Trek) lies in seventh at 1:11.

Jan Hirt (Soudal-QuickStep) is another two seconds back in eighth, ahead of Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan) and Esteban Chaves (EF Education-EasyPost), who round out the top 10 at 1:26 down.

Stage 6 of the Giro d'Italia traverses some trickier ground with three gravel sectors inside the final 50km of the 180km stage from Viareggio to Rapolano Terme. While it's only rated as a two-star stage in terms of difficulty, it could shake up the GC a little more than the past two days of racing.
