WHEN AN 8-0 AWAY WIN DOESN'T EVEN MAKE YOUR TOP TEN NEWCASTLE UNITED MATCHES OF THE SEASON
There have been some cracking Newcastle United matches this season.
Hopefully with at least a few more to add to that collection in these remaining half dozen Premier League games.
Yes, I know this season has had its fair share of frustrations and disappointments, however, I do think it is important to at the same time appreciate some great Newcastle United matches these past eight or nine months.
My intention was to go through all the games this season and pick the ten stand out Newcastle United matches. Little did I know just how difficult it would be to narrow it down to just the ten!
I had to leave out some cracking performances and/or results but here we go, in date order (not order of preference, that is below).
My top 10 Newcastle United matches this 2023/24 season (so far…)
12 August 2023 – Newcastle 5 Aston Villa 1
27 September 2023 – Newcastle 1 Man City 0
4 October 2023 – Newcastle 4 PSG 1
1 November 2023 – Man U 0 Newcastle 3
4 November 2023 – Newcastle 1 Arsenal 0
25 November 2023 – Newcastle 4 Chelsea 1
6 January 2024 – Sunderland 0 Newcastle 3
30 January 2024 – Aston Villa 1 Newcastle 3
30 March 2024 – Newcastle 4 West Ham 3
13 April 2024 – Newcastle 4 Tottenham 0
I had to leave out a fair few contenders when picking my top ten.
Amongst them, the 8-0 away annihilation of Sheffield United!
The 1-0 home win over Man U in December is another, Newcastle were excellent that day and could and should have put four or five past them. October’s 4-0 trouncing of Wednesday night’s opponents Palace was also very good, another match where the winning margin should have been far wider. Whilst even though it ended in a draw, I thought especially with so many players missing the 1-1 performance in Paris was exceptional and United only cheated by that late penalty.
So putting my top 10 Newcastle United matches this 2023/24 season in order, this is my top one downwards:
(My criteria was a combination of the quality of performance, the final score, how the match played out, the NUFC players involved / available, who the opposition were, which characters it particularly upset and so on)
