GLENTORAN VS LINFIELD PITCH INSPECTION UPDATE AHEAD OF IRISH CUP CLASH

Friday night's Irish Cup showdown between Glentoran and Linfield has been given the go-ahead despite this week's rain throwing the game in doubt.

A pitch inspection was held on Friday afternoon to determine whether the huge semi-final tie would go ahead as scheduled.

There had been considerable rain in Belfast over the past number of days, leaving the Oval's playing surface saturated in water.

The Irish FA announced on Thursday that a pitch inspection would be required on Friday before any decision was made on the game going ahead, and thankfully a spell of dry weather has helped lift some of the water.

Glentoran confirmed on Friday that the game was good to go, with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Friday night's game is the first of two massive Irish Cup semi-finals this weekend. Cliftonville and Larne meet in the second tie on Saturday at Windsor Park. That game has a 5.30pm kick-off.

Both matches are due to be streamed live on the BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport NI website.
